In a world where everything is planned, managed and controlled, the concept of surrender can bring you to your knees. It doesn't have to. Especially if you shift your perception of surrender and the benefits that come along with it.

The first thing to realize is that surrender is not about giving up. It's not a concession that life is too hard or that you're not good enough. Far from it.

"Surrender enables something to appear that's even better or more appropriate than what you're hoping to manifest." -Tanya Carroll Richardson

You can typically tell when it's time to surrender your will: things feel forced and you feel exhausted.

So then, what is surrender about?

  1. Being relaxed and open.

When you surrender control, your body finds a space of fluidity and openness. Activities feel more effortless and flow with greater ease. Your mind is no longer constricted with controlling how things should go. Instead, your mind is open to looking at things differently.

2. Allowing

Surrender allows for the acceptance of the unexpected left turn. You free yourself from the expectations and attachment to outcomes.  Fresh ideas come in that weren't part of the original plan.

"Get so clear on what you want to create in your life and why. Then throw your expectations out the window and start taking action with lots of room for improvisation." -Emily Fletcher, founder of Ziva Meditation

3. Trusting

Trust includes timing as well as not knowing what you don't know. It's ok to not know something. Surrender makes room for the information to come into your world in both the time and way it is meant to. There is no shame in not knowing. Trust that all will present itself.

4. Listening

Listen within to what is best for you. When you are trying to control something and meeting resistance, you are out of alignment. Surrender the doing and listen. Slow down and pay attention. Go for a walk. Journal. Meditate. Listen to yourself to find out what you most need.

"When you surrender to the fact that you're always evolving, you can stop getting so surprised every time change comes knocking!" -Alexandra Roxo

Surrender is an act of courage, bringing about what is best for you.

Lean in and let go.

Be crumbled.

So wild flowers will come up where you are.

You have been stony for too many years.

Try something different.

Surrender.

-Rumi

Sometimes surrender means giving up trying to understand and becoming comfortable with not knowing.

-Eckhart Tolle

The simple intention to surrender control is all you need to experience miracles.

-Gabrielle Bernstein

All you must do is accept all that is unacceptable to you.

-Cheri Huber
